Warehouse, zone, location
Huup uses three levels. A warehouse is a site with an address. A zone is an area within it — aisle, mezzanine, bulk store. A location is the specific bin, shelf or pallet space a SKU sits in.
The address is not cosmetic. The warehouse address is stamped on carrier labels as ship-from. An incomplete address here produces label failures at dispatch, not at setup.
Naming locations
- Use a scheme that sorts in walking order — aisle, then bay, then level, zero-padded so A-01-02 sorts before A-01-10.
- Keep it short enough to read from a label at arm's length.
- Do not encode product meaning into location codes. Products move; locations should not have to be renamed when they do.
Pick paths
Pick tasks are ordered by location rather than by order, so a picker walks the building once instead of once per order. Getting location naming right is what makes this work — the path is only as sensible as the sort order you gave it.
More than one site
- Each warehouse holds its own stock; available stock published to a channel is the total across the sites that channel may sell from.
- Transfers move stock between sites without changing what you own — in-transit units cannot be sold twice.
- Carrier accounts can be scoped per warehouse so each site buys labels on its own contract.
